Fantasy Football Magazines Are Out
I saw a handful at the local bookstore.
Flipped through all of them, but didn’t have the time to investigate anything. I saw the price tag on one was $8.99 - yikes. That better be some damn good research. I mean think about it, if the most you can win in your league is $100 (and that’s if you win) you’ve already spent 9% of that just researching from one source. Another magazine was $6.99. What happened to the days when magazines were $2.99 and $3.99?
Oh well, can’t really blame them. Everyone is trying to make a dollar and they just want to see how far they can push the market without getting backlash.
NFL.com had an awesome holograph with Tom Brady on the cover. At that point it’s almost worth it as a collectible. I still have my Tatum Bell Fantasy Football Index magazine. Man that prediction was legendary. The owner got all ruffled when he read about it on my review site - FFmagazineReview. All that tells me is he needs to get real.
Apparently the denial is rampant. Here’s a post from FFtoday:
Of course, you don’t have to be very bold to challenge the assertions of the Index these days, since the staff is still trying to live down last year’s “Tatum Bell is the key to your draft” claim.
I actually liked the boldness of their claim. Yeah it was a huge Jose Canseco swing and a miss, but I like to see that from an expert. Anybody can tell you the safe picks. I want to know the big predictions. That Tatum Bell cover went south, but it could have just as easily branded them as geniuses for life.
On top of that fantasy football is a best guess game. No one is all the way right 100% of the time and you’re going to be even less right when you start making the big man lumberjack predictions. That’s just the nature of it all. They made a giant prediction and it was completely wrong. So what? Doesn’t mean they still don’t know their stuff. To me the only thing they (or maybe it was just one person) did wrong was try to play it off. Instead of trying to sweep your cover under the rug, own up and then try to make an even bolder prediction next year.
This post went west, but I had no direction when I started so there’s no reason for me to try to have one now. Oh yeah, one more thing, one footballguys.com put WP on their cover page - a guy I drafted mid first round - and he had 2 rushing TDs. Hmmm I need to have a player be my pick of the year. It has to be someone that isn’t a consensus good pick. Has to be somewhat of a surprise. I’ll think about it and I’ll get back to you. No matter who it is, I guarantee I won’t pretend I didn’t make the pick after the season is over.
