Steve Smith Hogtied to Jake Delhomme
I think Steve Smith is a great talent - fantasy and real life. However, his value is golden or brass based on Jake Delhomme. Delhomme missed 3 games in 2006 and 13 last year. When Delhomme goes out, Steve Smith’s stats check out. This is understandable - the guy can’t make the likes of David Carr and Chris Weinke decent QBs. This season Delhomme is back as an “undervalued” quarterback, but be leary. He’s coming off of Tommy John surgery and Carolina’s offensive line is average at best. One wrong hit and Delhomme is out and Steve Smith’s value plummets. If Steve Smith falls to late third/early fourth, he’s a better value but earlier than that, I let him go because he’s so risky with the Delhomme factor.
This year, a green Matt Moore is the backup and the Panthers have added both Mushin Muhammed and DJ Hackett, making the likelihood Steve Smith top 10 tds unlikely. Additionally, Smith while one of the tougher WRs still has been susceptible to his own injuries.
