Where Do You Think You’re Going SF?
Mike Martz is the offensive coordinator, but that doesn’t mean what it used to as his magic evaporated in the Motor City. What it does mean is more deep passes and less running the ball. Ok, so who’s passing the ball? I don’t know. The leading candidate might be unheralded journey man J.T. Sullivan. I think after that you’re looking at Alex Smith edging out Shaun Hill. Either way it’s a big mess. It’s typically not good to start your season with three bad quarterbacks duking it out to see who will emerge the least suckiest.
Frank Gore is the lone ranger in terms of fantasy studability. But one has to wonder if his teammates will continue to bring him down to a lower level. The offensive line is in a transitional phase - not to say that’s a bad thing after last season, but it’s hard to pin down what they will do. Larry Allen still hasn’t decided whether he’s coming back. As it stands, Adam Snyder will replace him at the guard spot. Joe Staley was acquired with the seventh pick in the draft but the 49ers switched him from his natural right guard spot and put him at left. Jonas Jennings is back after missing 11 games last season and two former starters are gone (Kwame harris and Justin Smiley).
What the hell does that mean? To be honest with you, I don’t know. Odds are they’ll be lackluster again which means with little talent elsewhere in the lineup, Frank Gore will have no running room again. He’s already lame around the goal line and the 49ers brought in Deshaun Foster to lighten the load so I’m downgrading him on my board. He was good for 1,538 and 6 total last season and I’m going to have to agree with FantasyDraftEdge that he won’t live up to the numbers I previously put him at. Mark him down for 1,650 and 8.
The receivers are mediocre city. Don’t expect Bryant Johnson to explode in a WR1 capacity. He’s had many-a-chances in Arizona over the last few years with injuries and never emerged. Isaac Bruce is 36 and locks entrenched at the number 2 spot which does nothing for me (even with his old coach Martz). Does anyone even care who gets the third spot? It’s probably Arnaz Battle who is too slow to make any waves, but can catch a TD every 3 or 4 games.
When it’s all said and done, the 49ers are and will be horrible. I hate the lack of talent and explosion. The head of the snake (QB) is going to be influx again and the only hope is the offensive line somehow develops a chemistry that allows Gore to be successful. Then again, Martz likes to pass more so that decreases the chances of Gore breaking one.
Ugh. Draft with caution.
