Who will be the Jaguars WR1, WR2, WR3?
Reggie Williams, the 10 tds in 38 catches guy for Jacksonville, sounds like he’s got some hazy injuries. He will have arthroscopic surgery after re-injuring his right knee. He had previously tweaked the knee and now Jack Del Rio has no time table for his return. It doesn’t sound like he’ll miss significant time after the season starts, but I do think his opening day status is at least in question. “He is going to need a little clean-out with some cartilage,” Del Rio said.
Jerry Porter, the team’s big off season signing tore his hamstring and will be out all pre-season after having surgery. This definitely is a bigger deal. Hamstring injuries - even tweaks - are hard to come back from and this one sounds like a full fledge tear. I’ve actually had my hamstring completely torn once and then to a lesser degree another time. Hearing this news, I’m completely dismissing Porter for 2008. Coming back from hamstring injuries - even slight tweaks - are extremely difficult. It doesn’t matter how tough you are, you can’t do anything about it. Even if you can play with the injury, you still can’t run or change directions easily and you are cautious because of the fear you’ll re-pull it. With this news, Porter is on my do not draft list - I thought he was a semi-sleeper before. However, now you can forget about it. He probably won’t even start practicing until week 5 at a minimum and even if he does that, he’ll still have to get in shape and continue rehabilitating his hamstring.
Other receivers Dennis Northcutt and Mike Walker have also missed practice time because of injuries. These guys will be ok though as long as they don’t get injured again. Earnest Wilford now plays for Miami.
So at the very least we have a WR shuffle and going down the continuum we might have a situation with 2 or 3 WRs out opening day. Now, stockpile the news that center Brad Meester will miss significant time with a right bicep injury - so much time you shouldn’t be counting on him to block for David Garrard this season.
All of these injuries should have you downgrading David Garrard and rising on big TE Mercedes Lewis. With Jerry Porter out, Lewis figures to receive a an even bigger bucketful of targets. Garrard on the other hand is losing valuable chemistry time with Reggie Williams and the other WRs. He’s still a calm, efficient QB but downgrade him another round and a half on your draft board.
As for as Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor, I think they remain unaffected. The loss of Meester and talent at the WR spot will give them less room to run, but that will be offset with the bundle of carries that will be added to their total.
